99 Food and Drink Prices, S01E03: France

Welcome to Season 1 Episode 3 of “99 Food and Drink Prices.”

This whole new series is designed to show you what the prices of food and drink items are in countries all around the world so that you can get a pretty good idea of what the cost of living in each country that I feature is.

As much as possible, I will try to list the same or similar items from episode to episode.

This episode is dedicated to France. The currency of France is the Euro, abbreviated EUR.

All of the pictures below were taken at Carrefour Market. I decided to use Carrefour as my source because it’s one of the biggest and most popular supermarket chains in the country. You can, however, often find most of the items pictured here cheaper at other shops/supermarkets.

Note: ALL PRICES ARE IN (the equivalent of) USD for easy comparison to other episodes of “99.” The exchange rate I used was 0.91 EUR to 1 USD.

Scroll all the way to the end of this article to see how much money you will need to buy all 99 items!

Fruits (15) –> $49.55 buys you one kg of each of eight of the items and one each of the other seven items

Vegetables (15) –> $54.59 buys you one kg of each of eight of the items, one each of five of the items, and one bag / pack of the other two items

Drinks and Such (15) –> $99.10 buys you one of each (but nearly half the cost is for the bottle of champagne alone!)

Breakfast / Sandwich Items (15) –> $46.00 buys you one of each

(Normally) Canned Goods (9) –> $13.78 buys you one of each

Oils, Condiments, and Pasta (9) –> $30.35 buys you one of each

Baking Items, Rice, Lentils (9) –> $21.33 buys you one of each

Cookies and Ice Cream (6) –> $21.50 buys you one of each

Baked Goods and Ready-to-Eat Foods (6) –> $16.03 buys you one of each

Summary

$352.23 buys you all 99 items here (although sometimes that means you are getting a kg of an item).

That works out to an average of $3.56 per item.

Note: The most expensive item listed here, by far, is the champagne, which costs nearly $48, thus skewing the grand total and the average per item quite a bit. Furthermore, the Jim Beam was the second most expensive item at over $21. If you replaced the champagne and the bourbon with much cheaper products (for, say, $15 instead of $69) the total cost of the 99 items would be closer to $298 and the average would then be closer to $3.01 per item.

What do some (or all) of these items cost where you live? Leave a comment below and let me know!
